A new trojan is making the rounds that specifically targets Mac computers. The malware, “Trojan.Yontoo.1” attempts to monetize its attack by injecting ads into Chrome, Firefox, and Safari, according Russian security firm Doctor Web.

There are several ways the trojan can get onto your Mac. These include criminals crafting movie trailer pages that prompt users to install a browser plugin. It can also arrive as a media player, a video quality enhancement program, or a download accelerator.

Regardless of how Trojan.Yontoo.1 makes its way onto a computer, users will receive the dialogue box shown above.

As you can see, the trojan wants the user to install Free Twit Tube. Once a user clicks the “Continue” button, however, it is the trojan that is actually installed. Once this happens, criminals are able to detect and use information collected from the user via the Web.

To protect yourself from this malware, be sure that your browser is updated to the most recent version. In addition, refrain from installing plug-ins from unknown companies.
